WOMEN UNITED ART MOVEMENT

April 5 - May 5, 2023

VIRTUAL EXHIBITION

This Solo Exhibition, shows a range of prints on paper rom my Burmese Days series, which started in 2006 while I was living in Burma, also called Myanmar.

For these pieces my inspiration came from the shape of a pleated skirt, common in eastern Shan State, when it is laid flat or flared out in a full spin. I explore the beauty and meaning of these fabrics through some exquisite woodcut prints.

My pieces hint at women’s lives lived within these precious textiles as they are worn, washed, faded by the sun, lashed by the rain, torn, repaired and worn again.

My aim is never to mimic the fabric exactly, but to reflect the lifespan of a skirt - from the intricacies of the original sewing to the repairs, often crude, that add layers of colour and interest.

I want to show that these deeply valued textiles bear witness to the lives of the women who grow, play, work, celebrate and die within them. We are challenged to imagine moments of these lives – the special and the mundane.

Combining monoprint and woodcut I print by hand onto handmade Burmese and Japanese paper and add stitching by hand.

INTRICACY

MAIN LINE ART CENTER GALLERIES - HAVERFORD, US

November 11th - December 23rd , 2022

INTRICACY: THE 19TH ANNUAL BETSY MEYER MEMORIAL EXHIBITION
Juror - Susanna W. Gold, ph.D.

The Meyer Family Award for Contemporary Art, presented by Main Line Art Center in conjunction with the Betsy Meyer Memorial Exhibition, honors chosen artists with an exhibition in the Center's gallery and an award of $1,000. This award and associated exhibition program is an effort to support talented contemporary artists, to honor deserving artists in the field, and to encourage excellence and experimentation in artistic practice, presentation, and community involvement.

INTRICACY brings together three artists working in different mediums - sculpture, printmaking, and installation - for a deep-dive into the labor-intensive processes that yield their delicate yet complex forms. Becca Barolli bends, weaves, braids, and knits wire lengths with repetitive, compulsive movements to shape her work into seemingly soft forms that resemble anything but metal. Agathe Bouton surpasses our expectations of traditional printmaking with her large-scale compositions that are combined and recombined, cut, layered, and stitched into endless variations. Eric Standley builds his series of over 50 elaborate, radiating designs from layer upon layer of vibrant paper that has been cut with exacting precision, each intimately-scaled work demanding to be considered in its own right as well as within the broader installation context. When viewed in juxtaposition, the work of Barolli, Bouton, and Standley encourages the viewer to understand the detailed and complicated methods behind their equally detailed and complicated compositions.

Patterns in nature

ONLINE EXHIBITION PRESENTED BY WOART

October 1 - 31, 2021

To access the exhibition and online store - Patterns in Nature

This Online Exhibition presented by WoArt features artists from across the the United States using the various natural patterns of trees, waves, stripes, symmetries, spirals and fractals as inspiration in their work.

I have 2 works in the show, Soirée d'été XXVII and a diptych, Soirée d'été XVI.

Soirée d’été (Summer Evening) is inspired by my daily walks in my neighborhood during the Covid-19 lockdown from March 2020. The works are monochrome monotypes that use the plants I collected during these walks, which I then passed under my etching press, giving life to a composition, with each work being unique. I use a deep blue ink and print on rice paper which brings lightness and finesse to the printed work.
